Four Good Reasons to Visit the Brecon Beacons

1.Well being: The Brecon Beacons has become a centre for all branches of wellbeing. There is a very varied choice of pursuits from pure yoga retreats to full-on fitness or adventure holidays. Or you can combine the relaxation of yoga with activities. This is the brainchild of Michelle King of AdventureYogi. She organizes retreats and holidays that balance yoga with activities whilst incorporating healthy eating and massage.

Her vision is to combine yoga with adventure creating space for like-minded people to connect, have fun and journey together. The Brecon Beacons is one of her favourite destinations and she is planning to run several retreats, including over New Year and Easter, at Tall John’s House in the heart of the Brecon Beacons.

2. Cycling: You can cycle across the Brecon Beacons National Park using the new touring route, running from Llandeilo in the West to Abergavenny in the East. This new route follows a Roman Road with panoramic views of the Central Beacons, it winds along lovely country lanes before joining the pretty tow path by the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. There are 5 sections, of which 2 are family friendly and the others rather more challenging.

3. Walking: You can choose between hill walking, hiking or just plain walking! There are masses of walking routes, areas and events to choose from. To discover more about the National Park and learn useful skills, you could join an organised walk, or set out with a qualified walking guide. Walks start from beginners right up to experts and there are lots of destinations to choose from – waterfalls, mountains, riverside, canal-side, open country. 4. Stargazing: The first International Dark-Sky reserve in Wales is situated in the Brecon Beacons. You’d be hard pressed to find a community which goes to such great lengths to ensure light pollution is reduced. The hard work is obviously paying off – on a clear night you can see just about everything from anywhere" On a clear night in the Brecon Beacons, you can see the Milky Way, major constellations, bright nebulas and even meteor showers. It’s enough to make anyone starry eyed.

Our National Park has some of the highest quality dark skies in the whole of the UK, making it the perfect destination for stargazers. There are loads of events to enjoy stargazing National Park an International Dark Sky Reserve. In 2012, we became just the fifth destination in the world to be accredited.

We are working hard to preserve our magical night skies for future generations and help reduce carbon dioxide emissions in our Park. We also intend to help protect a whole host of nocturnal creatures that need dark nights to forage, hunt and migrate.
