The Royal Welsh Show – 22nd to 25th July 2019

The pinnacle event in the British agricultural calendar, the Royal Welsh Show, will be held on 22 - 25 July 2019 at the showground in Llanelwedd.

The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society was formed in 1904, and the first show was held in Aberystwyth in the same year. The Society has come a long way since those early days and the Royal Welsh Show has become an important event in the Welsh calendar. This success has allowed for the extensive development of the permanent showground at Llanelwedd, first used in 1963, which is set in the heart of the scenic Mid Wales countryside.

The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society has played a leading role in the development of agriculture and the rural economy in Wales for over a century since its formation in 1904. Today their work includes providing support for business, social welfare and education in rural communities, and the organisation and staging of their ever-popular Society events; the Spring Festival, the Summer Show and the Winter Fair.

At the show in July there are an exciting four-days of livestock competitions, with entries travelling from far and wide to compete. The show has something to interest everyone through its wide range of activities including forestry, horticulture, crafts, countryside sports, shopping, food and drink and a 12-hour programme each day of exciting entertainment, attractions and display.

Highlights include shearing & wool-handling displays and competitions, homecrafts, dairy produce, the Welsh National Honey Show, pets, rabbits, caveys ( I didn’t know what a cavey was till I wrote this blog – but is a little rodent from South America !),displays of treefelling, pole-climbing, woodchopping, farriers at work, ironwork and stick-making. You can see poultry and pigeons. Then there is the wonderful tug of war match too. And of course the food hall is amazing!

We welcome exhausted visitors to the show who come back from a wonderful but long day out and need a hot bath, a comfortable bed and a good night’s sleep!
