Wedding Gift Lists

We all have different ideas about our gift list for our wedding. If you are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle you can ask for donations to charities but most of us need something a bit more tangible than that.

Some people have a honeymoon fund which they ask people to donate to or something huge like carpeting their flat and they ask for vouchers towards that from a specific store.

However, I think I speak for most guests when I say that it is really nice to choose something off a list that you know the couple want or need and yet is individual to yourself. The two best ways to make a list are either with your favourite department store – make sure it has an online facility as not all your guests may live close to you. Or the other option is the growing market for online wedding list companies.

When you are drawing up your list there are several things to consider:-

- choose gifts of varied values so people can choose something they can afford

-you may want quite a few of one thing – plates, glasses, cutlery. So make sure guests can buy the number they wish to and then other guests can join them later

- choose some gifts that people will enjoy giving – quirky, amusing etc. Your aunts and grannies can give you the essential but more boring stuff!

So what would I suggest you consider for inclusion on your list?

  1. Really nice wine glasses. You may never feel able to afford these for a long time and, if you are careful, they will be yours for years

  2. Photo frames. You are going to have quite a few photos to put in them after your wedding and again, you may never feel able to buy good quality ones.

  3. Interesting lamps. A wonderful lamp can fit almost anywhere so it will adapt when you move house.

  4. Bath towels. These may sound boring but they make such a difference. Include some of the huge ones called bath sheets and go for Egyptian Cotton. They will last a long time and if you get different sets of sizes they will look great.

  5. Perhaps go off the wall a bit – a croquet set, a picnic basket, a hammock? Release your inner longings just this once!
