Wedding Music - the Harp

The harp is the national instrument of Wales, with an unbroken line of harpers reaching back to at least the 11th century. Little is known of the origins of these early instruments, although we do know that traditionally the strings were made of plaited horse hair rather the gut strings used today. But we do know that the harp has been used through the ages as an accompaniment to folk-singing and dancing and as a solo instrument.

Harp music was often used at weddings and is to this day. The music of the harp can be romantic and gentle but also lively and entertaining. It makes a perfect background for a romantic ceremony and also sounds wonderful at a reception as well.

The Official Harpist to the Prince of Wales is a position within the Royal Household. In 2000, Charles, Prince of Wales revived a tradition of having Welsh harpists, which was the first time the post has been occupied since it was last granted to John Thomas in 1871 by Queen Victoria.

Here at Tall John’s House we are really pleased to have Eluned Hollyman on our Suppliers’ List. She is a young but experienced Welsh harpist, based in Cardiff, South Wales. Studying with Caryl Thomas at the Royal Welsh College at Music and Drama, she is in her final year. Eluned has a broad range of repertoire and styles, from jazz to musicals to classical, and often plays at recitals, weddings and private functions.

As a soloist, Eluned has been a finalist in the Urdd Eisteddfod multiple times, as well as winning National Eisteddfod 16-19 category in 2014. She has been Caerphilly Young Musician of the Year as well as making multiple solo appearances in concerts with male voice choirs. Eluned has played in many ensembles, including performing for the 70th birthday celebrations of HRH Prince Charles at the RWCMD, a duet with Catrin Finch, National Youth Orchestra of Wales, and Four Counties Youth Orchestra.

Eluned has extensive wedding experience and so has a really good repertoire suitable for both ceremonies and drinks receptions, as well as wedding breakfasts.

She is very flexible and always happy to extend her repertoire or tailor it to your wishes for your big day.
