Wet weather activities in the Brecon Beacons

Although it is really comfortable in our self-catering cottages and the manor house, you can’t stay in ALL day on those “occasional” wet days in Wales!

There are some wonderful things to do a short drive from Tall John’s House that do not depend on the weather:-

  1. Big Pit National Coal Museum.
Big Pit is a real coal mine as well as being one of Britain’s leading mining museums. There is an exciting audio-visual experience where the galleries house simulated underground workings and you see how miners reach the coal using explosives and large rock-cutting machines. But the highlight has to be the guided underground tour when you put on a helmet and go down in the cage as the miners do and get a real feeling for the experience. You even see where the pit ponies lived!

  2. National Showcaves Centre for Wales.
There are 3 amazing caves to visit – Dan yr Ogof Cave, Cathedral Cave and Bone Cave. Where the river Llynfell emerges from the mountain is where the Morgan Brothers discovered the cave system in 1912. They only had candles and used a coracle to get across the lakes they found and ropes for the climbs! You can now visit these much more easily.

  3. Llangorse Multi Activity Centre.
This is the ultimate in wet weather fun! They have so much to offer the whole family in their climbing centre:-

    • Wales’ only indoor natural rock climbing

    • Artificial rock climbing walls

    • Low level bouldering areas

    • Test your balance on the rickety rope bridges

    • Scramble across the high level cargo net

    • Extensive natural rock caving system

    • Fly down the indoor zip line

    • Climb ‘Dudley’ the Dragon & ‘Phil’ the dinosaur!

    • Abseiling from 16 metres or a beginners’ tower

So there is no need for your spirits to sink if you have a wet day on your holiday – it’s an opportunity to do something wonderful.
