Tall John’s House Gets Greener

In the words of my son, Archie, “shall we turn on the heating and kill another polar bear? Or should we put on another sweater?”

Obviously a bit over the top, but nonetheless, if we all do nothing, we will destroy this planet for our grandchildren and the generations beyond.

So what is Tall John’s House doing about it? Little steps but they will make a difference:-

  • We no longer supply water in plastic bottles for picnics or guests.

  • We use eco-friendly toilet paper

  • We buy produce that is not wrapped in plastic

  • We have only energy-saving light bulbs

  • We have switched to green energy sources throughout the property

  • We suggest to our guests that they turn off lights when not needed

  • We don’t actually say “shall we kill a polar bear or will you wear another sweater”! But we try to keep heating reasonable.

And we are not alone! The Brecon Beacons National Park has joined the Refill Scheme.

Refill is a national, practical tap water campaign which allows you to refill your own water bottle with free tap water at refill stations across the UK.

Participating hotels, attractions, cafes, bars, restaurants, banks, galleries, museums and other businesses simply put a sticker in their window – alerting passers-by to the fact they’re welcome to come on in and fill up their bottle – for free! You can download a free app to see where you can Refill on the go, or add new places to Refill yourself!

There are already have over 40 businesses signed up in the area – so check out where they are on the app and look out for the window stickers – when out and about in the National Park.

Single-use plastic bottles are expensive to produce, use up valuable natural resources to make and transport and create mountains of waste. And recycling’s not the answer either, according to the latest figures from recyclenow.com, here in the UK an estimated 11,000 plastic bottles a MINUTE are either ending up in landfill or as litter, which will too often make its way into our waterways and out to sea.

By buying and using a reusable water bottle you will also save yourself a small fortune and they often pay for themselves within a week going on to save you money with every free Refill from then on!
