Looking at Gardens Near Brecon
We have quite a few visitors who come to stay with us, either in our self-catering cottages or in our Manor House, in order to visit local gardens. In fact we have a group from the Welsh Historic Gardens Trust visiting us in June for this very purpose.
And boy are they spoiled for choice in this area!
I have already written about the superb gardens at Llanover which are well worth a visit but another extremely popular garden that is much nearer to us is at Gliffaes near Crickhowell. The gardens boast a 19th Century arboretum and you can often persuade the owners to take you on their fantastic Tree Walk around the estate. To top off a brilliant outing, the Gliffaes Afternoon Tea is second-to-none and you can’t top the location either as it is perched about the River Usk with spectacular views down to the river.
Much closer to home – and of course by “home” I mean our manor house at Tall John’s House – are Treberfydd Gardens. Indeed you can walk between the two houses.
The bonus at Treberfydd is the Walled Garden which is run by Alison and is just a feast of wonderful plants grown in the nursery in the old (Victorian) walled garden – structural, unusual, edible, herbal or fragrant. Alison herself is a fount of knowledge and always eager to help with your purchases! Good idea to book ahead to alison@walledgardentreberfydd.com or ring her on 01874 730169.
Alison also offers courses on a wide range of horticultural subjects so good to look at her website.
And actually our own gardens, though not yet in the same league as the above, are coming on wonderfully and we are bringing our own walled garden back to life so also worth a stroll round.
They say the British are a nation of shopkeepers but in my experience we are a nation of gardeners! There aren’t many troubles that aren’t lightened or improved by a spell of weeding, cutting back or potting on!
So all you gardeners out there – why not take a day or two to stay in the beautiful Brecon Beacons and enjoy some fine Welsh gardens to boot.
